Each month from September through June, the Massachusetts Bible Society sponsors a luncheon in downtown Boston with a talk by an area scholar or person of note. While we welcome people at the door, it is helpful to have advance registration so that we can plan food accordingly. A $10 donation is requested. Contact us to be on a list to receive regular e-mail notices about our luncheons.
Beginning in 2008 we have begun a Young Scholar luncheon, where one of our presenters each year is a student between the ages of 17-20 (inclusive) seeking a career in a religious field. For more information on becoming one of our Young Scholars, please contact us.
Check our Special Events listing for information about our upcoming luncheons and other programs.
We operate our luncheons at a loss so that we might continue to bring quality speakers for a reasonable cost. If you would like to make an additional donation to help keep these programs going, that is always much appreciated.
Our June luncheon was presented by Dr. Nicola Denzey, author and lecturer at Brown and Harvard Universities. Although about to give birth, she braved the Boston subway system and brought us this lecture based on her book The Bone Gatherers: The Lost Worlds of Early Christian Women. Her presentation was largely based on her powerpoint presentation of artwork from the catacombs in Rome. While videotaping a powerpoint presentation in the dark is not ideal and does funky things with the color, hopefully you can get enough of it here to illustrate what she is saying. Is this really the tomb of the Priscilla who Paul indicated led an early church? Is that really a picture of her on the wall being ordained? Hmmm...
Our May luncheon lecture, "Can Poetry Save Us?" was presented by Dr. Mark Burrows, Professor of the History of Christianity at Andover Newton Theological School. You can watch it here.
The Massachusetts Bible Society is able to sustain its ministries of Bible Grants, educational events, and nurturing Biblical literacy and open spiritual/theological dialogue through financial contributions from people and organizations such as you. Please click here to support MBS.
