Beck Lectures

Each fall, the Massachusetts Bible Society is proud to sponsor leading biblical scholars to present lectures in five different locations across the state.  Past lecturers have included Barbara Brown Taylor, Walter Brueggemann, Marcus Borg, Joan Chittester, and many others.

Named for former Boston University professor Harrell F. Beck, three are given in the evening, and two are luncheons.  The evening lectures are free, while a donation and reservations are requested for the luncheons.  Contact us for more information on reserving a space at one of the two luncheons.

The 2008 Harrell F. Beck Lectureship

Rev. Peter Gomes

The Trouble with Scripture:

What's So Good about the Good News?

Rev. Peter J. Gomes will be presenting our evening lectures on October 19-21.

Jesus came preaching, but the church wound up preaching Jesus.  Why does the church insist upon making Jesus the object of its attention rather than heeding his message?  Esteemed Harvard minister Peter J. Gomes believes that excessive forcus on the Bible and doctrines about Jesus have led the Christian church astray.  To recover the transformative power of the gospel - "the good news" - Gomes says we must go beyond the Bible and rediscover how to live out Jesus' original revolutionary message of hope.

The identical evening lectures start at 7:30pm and are free and open to the public.

October 19, 2008 at the Federated Church in Hyannis, 310 Main Street, Hyannis, MA

October 20, 2008 at Smith College in the Helen Hills Hills Chapel, Elm Street, Northampton, MA

October 21, 2008 at Old West Church, 131 Cambridge Street, Boston, MA

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1942, The Reverend Professor Peter J. Gomes is an American Baptist minister ordained to the Christian Ministry by The First Baptist Church of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Since 1970 he has served in The Memorial Church, Harvard University; and since 1974 as Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in The Memorial Church.
